In yet more fallout from Corona several dog tracks that would have closed at the end of the year decided they don’t plan to reopen even if they could. That means there are now over 1000 greyhounds in Florida looking for a new place to lay their sweet, beautiful heads.
I’ve seen articles listing anywhere from 1000-1500 looking for homes now, but between now and December there will be between 4000- 5000 dogs looking for homes.
My home is currently full with 2 greyhounds and 2 cats. I wouldn’t be surprised if we foster though if our adoption group puts out a call for help.
Look deep into those eyes. They’ll hypnotize you to share your couch and your lunch.
Like big dogs but think you only have space for a small dog? No problem, this is the natural state of a greyhound.
If you’re at all interested whether it’s because you want to adopt or just help these lovable goofballs find a home just google greyhound rescues near you. I’m sure most US Oppos will have one nearby.

I would love a grey hound but I doubt they would like the cold weather we have in montana.

There are jackets for that. There’s actually a lady that’s part of a Facebook greyhound group that has two in Alaska. They certainly won’t want to hang out with you while you go sledding, but as long as the heat in the house works they’re good for trips to the potty.

I would but this one doesn’t get along with anything that’s not human, including other cats, the va cuum, and a few pieces of furniture

We have our two. One is perfectly content to pretend they don’t exist, and the other is curious about them but satisfied with walking up and giving a sniff from time to time.

I've caught this one hissing at the dining room chairs

I want one so bad, but I have a shitty low chainlink fence around the back yard, no dog door, and when/if I can go back to normal work, the house would be empty ca. 10 hours a day.
I have a back room that’s pretty separated from the rest of the house, and always figured that with a decent fence and a dog door, I could put a water fountain and automatic feeder in there and maybe get away with adopting a grey, since it could be basically self maintaining during the day with that arrangement.

Somebody’s gotta keep those shifty things in line.

If the room is separated but still on your house’s HVAC system an idea like that may work. Most folks think about how they can’t handle cold, but heat can be just as much of an issue for them.
We actually take a cooling pad with us when we take hikes with Ruby when it’s warm. It is basically a gel filled pad that stays cool to the touch. She’ll nap on it on the ride home to cool off. We also have a cooling vest which you put on them and just keep it moist so they can cool through evaporation, but we just got it this winter and haven’t tried it yet.
The water is important but ours only eat two meals a day so you may not need the automatic feeder.

It isn’t, but it does have water, electric baseboards and I put a window a/c unit in there during the summer.
I had a friend who did something similar for his Labrador - locked the laundry room off from the rest of the house, dog door, good fence, and water fountain. It worked, sorta, but the thing did seem to suffer from some separation anxiety, which does have me a little worried about trying it.

O nly a grey hound could look like its at full gallop while asleep, well done. I’m at max capacity for my small yard, but there will be more dogs in my future

Ruby has no issues at all with separation anxiety. We don’t know about Cornbread yet because my wife was switched to work from home before we got him. There are only a couple owners in the group we’ve worked with that have mentioned any problems though. They both get very excited and rush towards me when I get home.
Retired racers are very used to living by a schedule though, so if your work hours are consistent they adapt pretty well. Plus, they sleep 18-20 hours a day.

Yeah, its why I would consider attempting it with a greyhound, but pretty much no other dog. I really felt bad for that Lab, they tend to be especially needy dogs in terms of human attention

“Maybe Sammy would be less destructive if she had a friend?”
- A discussion that has occurred with everyone.
I hope those greyhounds find homes.

Oh man. I’ve always loved greyhounds. But life is so crazy right now I don’t think we're a good fit for a doggo.

Someone is in papa’s spot again!!

Ruby did well on her own, but it’s clear she’s much happier now that she has a friend. It very well might help with her separation anxiety, and maybe the destructive energy would translate more into play time.

It’s funny that you think it’s your spot. You’re just allowed to use it when she isn’t.

These are my thoughts as well. However, we gave our husky growing up a friend. RIP the couches.

Our yard didn’t stand a chance with one. With the second I’m considering just bringing in a load of sand like they used to race on.

Might I suggest a more Flintstones inspired decorating style.

That jacket is from a company in Finland. We figure if anyone knows how to make cold weather gear they would.
I know she looks upset in the photo, but Ruby actually likes wearing clothes. She was just upset that we put her in a coat and didn’t take her anywhere.
